A Truly Classic Vintage Car For Hire
The James Bond film, Goldfinger in 1964, is where the screen romance between 007 (James Bond) and the Silver Birch Aston Martin DB5 began. The author Ian Fleming had written in his best-selling book of 1959 that the debonair British spy drove an Aston Martin DB3 through Europe on the scent of arch-villain Auric Goldfinger. When the film was made in 1963, the producers Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli and Harry Saltzman upgraded 007 from the Aston Martin DB3, from the book, to Aston Martin's latest model to the DB5. The partnership of Sean Connery (James Bond) and the DB5 shot both to fame and the DB5 is now known as:- "The Most Famous Car in the World".

Hire a Screen Legend
The car soon became a screen legend fitted with Browning machine guns in the front side lights, revolving number plate (English, French and Swiss) so as Bond could travel through these countries without attracting interest to a foreign car. An oil slick from the rear lights and spinners would extend from the wheels to slash unsuspecting baddies' tyres. A bullet-proof screen would project from in front of the rear screen to protect the occupants from gunfire. Who can forget the little red button underneath the gear knob which , when pressed, would activate the ejector seat to remove the unwanted passengers through the roof. I certainly remember playing with the Corgi DB5 model car with legendary ejector seat and the little red man that would fly across the room, and then spend 10 minutes trying to find him again.

Again in 1995 with Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye where he races a Ferrari in the opening scene. 1997 saw it in Tomorrow Never Dies. Casino Royale saw Daniel Craig play Bond telling the story of how he acquired the DB5 by winning a poker game. Its last appearance was in Skyfall again in the hands of Daniel Craig.

The History of this Aston Martin DB5
A Classic Car Enthusiasts Dream Come True
The Setting of the Scene
It was in 2003 when I thumbed through the Classified's in the news sheet from Aston Martin Owners Club and there it was: DB5 Renovation Project. It seemed too reasonable so I didn't call immediately assuming it would be sold. After a few days I thought I'd give it a call, you never know... A man answered the phone and I enquired about the Aston Martin DB5. He said he had just moved offices and that I was the first enquiry about the car he had actually spoken to despite having around 70 messages on his answering machine. So, we got chatting and I explained about how owning a DB5 had been my childhood dream and, in the end, the deal was done over the phone. True to his word he kept the car for me until the following weekend when I could arrange for a trailer to collect my new purchase.

Realising the Dream
There it was, my DB5! It was in need of a lot of TLC but, given time, I knew it would be stunning. Once home I left it for six months before I made a start, in late 2003 the restoration began. Firstly, I stripped the car to a bare shell taking hundreds of pictures and drawing lots of diagrams and making very detailed notes. This was to be a long project and it was critical I remembered where everything went!

Making Dreams Come True
I'd already chosen the best in the business to restore her. In 2004, I took the body shell by trailer to Alan Pointer at Bodylines. Together with his skilled team, Alan carried out a complex renovation of the body. The pictures show the extent of the repair and what an amazing job they did. In my opinion it was better than new.

Following The Dream
Next... It travelled a short distance to Adrian George at Spray-Tech Restorations. It was here where Adrian, Simon and the enthusiastic team gave it a fine coat of paint. It then returned home to me to initiate the task of being put back together again.

Our Aston Martin DB5 is for Hire
I took the engine to an Aston Martin Engine Specialist JMB Services in Tiptree. I had been introduced to Peter and James by a mutual friend; Malcolm McGregor who is known as a legendary engine builder and racer on the Aston club circuit. After brunch there was no question in my mind who I would entrust with my engine. Over several years (delay on my part, not theirs) we converted it to a 4.2 Vantage specification with a few of JMB's subtle modifications.

Tried & Tested
Almost 10 years later, in 2013, the engine was back in. A road trip needed to be organised to put this car to the test. I bolted a couple of seats in and persuaded James from JMB Services (now a good friend of mine) to accompany me to the Le Mans 24 hour race. We weren't entering but it was a thrill nonetheless. The car behaved impeccably and the engine was superb not to mention the admiring looks the car acquired over the trip.

Attention to Detail
In 2014 Mick 'The Trimmer' from Elite Coach Trimmings had the car for a full carpet set and tidy up internally. I retained the original leather seats as the patina and history just cannot be replicated with today's hides. Throughout the restoration process I have tried to retain as much of the original character as possible while making good what was sadly too far gone. Hopefully you'll agree I have succeeded.
